Table Saw Buying Guide

Table saws can be big ticket purchases, which is why you should consider the following factors to ensure you buy the right one for your needs. First thing to understand is that a table saw is a bit different that other type of saws, given that the blade is located in a fixed position, so you have to push the work material through it to make cuts.

A table saw however can make a variety of cuts including straight, long, rip cuts, miter and bevel cuts, and repeated cross cuts much more accurately than handheld circular saws.

Tables saws consists of a few standard components including:

Rip fence – a bar placed on the tool that serves as a guide for the workpiece as it works its way past the blade. This alone provides a great advantage compared to few other cutting tools such as a circular saw, but it is important to choose a rip fence that secures the workpiece well, so that you can make clean cuts.

Most table saws come factory equipped with a standard T-square fence, which provides great accuracy, and works well for average user. Some table saw models don’t come with a fence, but you can buy one separately to customize the tool for your needs.

When speaking about rip fences, another important aspect worth mentioning is the rip capacity, which should ideally be more than 24” for any jobsite table saw.

Bevel system – this system allows you to tilt the blade to make angled cuts.

Miter gauge – you can adjust this guide to move the workpiece across the blade when making cuts at specific angles. It features a locking mechanism that swivels between 40 degrees and 45 degrees, and then slides into a miter slot. You will have to adjust the miter gauge whether you want to make right-angled or compound cuts.

Riving knife – this component prevents the workpiece from pinching the blade, consequently reducing the risk of the workpieces falling back towards the operator.

Blade guard – this protects the operator from dust and debris, as well as accidental contact with the blade of the table saw.

Blade – perhaps the most important part of any table saw, the blade is available in several different types and specifications, which are defined by the number of teeth, arbor size, diameter, speed, and application. 10 inches is the standard blade diameter, and offers a 3-½” cut capacity at 90 degrees.

Table saw blades can be made from several different types of materials including carbon, carbide or diamond-tipped teeth, and some of these can cut other materials apart form wood.

Motor – table saws can come with one of two motor/drive combinations — direct-drive and belt drive, where the former connects directly with the blade, and transfers all power to it, and the latter come with a belt that transfers power to the blade.

Most, if not all portable table saws are fitted with direct-drive configuration, whereas belt-drive saws with induction motors are quieter, and a preferred choice for cutting denser material.

Types of table saws – there are several different types of table saws to choose from, most commonly portable (compact, jobsite, benchtop), and stationary (hybrid, contractor, cabinet). Portable table saws just as the name would suggest are fairly lightweight, and designed to be placed on a table.

Benchtop table saws are to be placed on a workbench or table, and are often lightweight, and an ideal choice for hobbyists, homeowners, and DIYers. Compact table saws are a bit larger than benchtop models, whereas jobsite table saws come mounted on a stand.

ON/off switch – all table saws come with a on/off switch, but what’s important is that the switch should be easy to access when using the tool. Most table saw power switches are larger than other buttons and switches, and are set where they can be accessed easily.

Amps – this represents the power output of the respective table saw, where the higher the number, the more power to make cuts.

Storage – the best table saws come with a storage compartment to store necessary tools and accessories such as rip fence, safety glasses, push stick, blades, and more.

Throat plate – when shopping for the best table saw, you may have heard the term throat plate crop up often. This removable piece sits flush with the blade, and prevents material from getting stuck between the blade and inside the arbor.

Dust chutes – this feature is often overlooked, but is important because it allows you to get rid of the nasty particles a table saw produces by connecting with a vacuum.

Table Saws FAQ’s

Q: Can you use an extension cord with a table saw?

A: Yes, you can use an extension cord with a table saw, but with caution! The extension cord you use should be free from any defects, and must be able to handle the amperage of your table saw. Using the wrong or a damaged extension cord could damage the motor of your table saw, so it is best to refer to the manufacturer user guide for best practices.

Q: What is the best electrical circuit for a table saw?

A: You should always try and use a dedicated electrical circuit for your table saw, ones that use a #12 or #14 copper wire with a 15 or 20 amp time delay fuse. Again, refer to your owner’s manual for best advice.

Q: My table saw keeps tripping due to overload, why?

A: This typically happen when there is no dedicated electrical circuit or if the blade binds up, resulting in motor overheating. You should always ensure that the blade is sharp, and not dull. If the blade is dull, be sure to replace it ASAP.

Q: Can you use dado blades with your table saw?

A: Yes, you can, but make sure that they are the right size for your table saw. Refer to your owner’s guide for compatible blades to use with your model table saw.

Q: How to maintain a table saw?

A: First things first — most table saws come factory lubricated including the bearings, so they don’t need additional lubrication unless it is mentioned in the user guide. Before you begin any maintenance task on your table saw, you should unplug it first if connected to an electrical outlet.

You can use any high quality automotive wax to polish the aw table, so that the workpieces slide smoothly across it when cutting. Since the blades are the most used part of the table saw, you will have to clean them periodically, preferably with a pitch and gum remover.

If the power cord is worn, cut or damages, do not attempt to use the table saw, but replace it ASAP by following the manufacturer instructions. The plastic parts of a table saw can be cleaned easily using a soft sponge and soapy water, but make sure they’re completely dry before re-installing them.

It is also good practice to check the blade of your table saw after every six or so hour of continuous operation. If you feel something isn’t right, then recalibrate the device according to your needs.
